Why Mabe Pearls are Worth The Investment

Why are Mabe Pearls so Expensive? Understanding the Value behind these Rare Gems

When it comes to pearls, few are as unique and captivating as the Mabe pearl. With their vivid, iridescent colours and distinctive shapes, these stunning gems are prized by collectors and jewellery lovers. But why are Mabe pearls so expensive? What makes them worth the investment? In this blog post, we’ll explore the factors contributing to the price of Mabe pearls and share some interesting facts about our rare treasures.

The Intricate Process of Cultivating Mabe Pearls

One of the main reasons mabe pearls are so valuable is the intricate and time-consuming process required to cultivate them. Unlike traditional round pearls, which form within the soft tissue of an oyster, mabe pearls develop on the inner shell of the mollusc, typically Paua -Abalone.

The cultivation process begins by carefully implanting a hemispherical nucleus onto the inside of the mollusc’s shell. Over several years, the mollusc secretes layers of nacre—a lustrous substance that gives pearls their shine—over the nucleus. This gradual buildup of nacre is what creates the beautiful, iridescent surface of the Mabe pearl. The entire process can take up to four years, during which the mollusc must be meticulously cared for to ensure the quality of the pearl.

After the pearl has fully developed, it must be carefully harvested by cutting it out with a diamond saw. Then, the pearls are thickness tested, and only the thickest ones are kept for jewellery. Thin ones are discarded. Backings are placed on each individual pearl and polished to perfect its appearance. The skill and patience required for this process contribute significantly to the cost of Mabe pearls.

The Rarity of Mabe Pearls

Mabe pearls are considered rarer than many others, particularly those grown in common oysters. This rarity is partly due to the specific conditions required to cultivate high-quality Mabe pearls.

For example, at Arapaoa Island in New Zealand, the pristine waters and unique environment provide ideal conditions for cultivating some of the world’s finest Mabe pearls. However, not every mollusk will produce a pearl even in these perfect conditions.

We never know what happens, but we do find that the younger abalone tends to cover the nacre better than the older abalone. Of those that do, only a small percentage will meet the high standards required for fine jewellery.

The Unique Characteristics of Mabe Pearls: A Fascinating World of Beauty

Mabe pearls are renowned for their unique characteristics, which contribute to their higher price tag. Their distinctive dome shape and large, flat surface area allow them to display exceptional luster and a wide range of colours. Depending on the mollusk and environmental conditions, mabe pearls can exhibit hues ranging from soft pinks and blues to deep purples and greens.

In addition to their stunning appearance, Mabe pearls are versatile in jewellery design. Their flat base makes them ideal for rings, earrings, pendants, and brooches, where they can be securely set against a surface by our master jewelier. This versatility adds to their appeal and value in the world of fine jewellery.
