The Only Island Where The Locals Are Paua
Are you looking for the perfect island beach accommodation? Welcome to Arapawa Island, nestled in the heart of the Marlborough Sounds. A place where the most fascinating locals aren't humans but are sea creatures called Paua (or Abalone). While most destinations boast about human inhabitants, we celebrate our unique molluscan community.
So, before you book that Marlborough Sounds holiday, why not check out, or better yet, check in, to one of our charming seaside homesteads in picturesque Whekenui Bay?
Meet The Locals
Have you ever strolled along the shore and spotted a shimmering, iridescent shell nestled in the sand? That delicate treasure once cradled one of our ocean’s dearest creatures, the paua. Here on Arapawa Island, we’ve lovingly recreated their natural habitat, offering each paua a well-earned retreat. With care and respect, we nurture them in a sanctuary of calm, and in return, they gift us with their rare and breathtaking blue pearls.
Whether you’re here for a tour or staying the night, this island beach accommodation lets you meet our molluscan locals up close, and trust us, they leave a lasting impression.

Little Colonsay Beach House
Craving a Beach Escape? We’ve Got Your Happy Place. Been daydreaming about salty air, crashing waves, and sun-soaked relaxation? Meet your new obsession: the modernised Little Colonsay Beach House. It's not just a beach house, it's the beach house. The place that whispers, “ditch your to-do list and bring snacks.” (No, really, bring snacks, there's no shop on the island).
Hosting a crew? No problem. This beauty sleeps up to 12, making it ideal for your Marlborough Sounds holiday crew, so bring the family, the in-laws, your friends, or that one mate who always “forgets” their wallet. Or keep it simple with just the two of you and soak in those sweeping romantic views, no awkward third wheels, unless you count the seagulls.
Gunyah
History nerds, this one’s for you. Love poking around places with a past? Gunyah is your time-travel ticket, minus the DeLorean. Built in 1945 and lovingly refurbished (translation: it’s vintage and comfy), this hillside homestead NZ guests fall in love with still oozes original charm, with just enough modern flair to keep your electric toothbrush happy.
The name Gunyah, from Australian Aboriginal origins, means “sheltered” or “sacred place”, and trust us, once you see those panoramic views and starry skies, you’ll be nodding in agreement. There’s room for up to 13 guests (yep, even that cousin who never brings a sleeping bag), and it’s perfectly suited for families, kids, and stargazers with a soft spot for nostalgia.
School Cottage
Love Whales? You Won’t Find Any in Here, But You’re Close! Okay, so there aren’t any actual whales inside this School Cottage (phew), but it was the island’s original school back in the whaling era, and there's a real-deal whaling station just over the hill if you're into history and blubber-related facts.
This charming little gem has been lovingly renovated to keep its historical soul intact, while adding just the right amount of modern comfort (because no one wants 1800s plumbing). Warm, welcoming, and full of stories, the School Cottage sleeps up to 6 guests and is just a short stroll to the beach, a true island beach accommodation favourite.
Class is out, and the beach is in. Would you like us to pencil you in?
Cue the Music… You’re About to Book the Whole Island
Got something big coming up? A family reunion? A wedding? A dramatic reality TV-style friend getaway (minus the camera crew)? Arapawa Island has you covered.
With exclusive use of all the accommodations, you can host up to 31 guests. That’s right, the whole gang, Nana, your cousins, your mate who brings a guitar everywhere, everyone. You’ll have the island’s tranquillity, charm, and ocean views all to yourselves. No sharing, no awkward small talk with strangers at the BBQ, just pure island magic for your crew.
A private Marlborough Sounds holiday dream come true.
Arapawa Island: The (Not So) Serious FAQ
Q. What’s the best way to get to Arapawa Island?
A. By water taxi from Picton, or if you’re feeling fancy, a helicopter ride from Wellington. Either way, it’s a scenic route.
Q. Is Arapawa Island really that remote?
A. If your GPS says “turn left at the next sheep”, you're on the right track.
Q. Can I bring my pet?
A. If your pet is a well-behaved paua, but yes, furry companions are more than welcome, but must be approved.
Q. Is there Wi-Fi available?
A. There is WiFI available at the homestead NZ lives for, but otherwise the only connection is nature. But don't worry; there’s still cell reception so that you can share your sunset pictures with the world.
Q. Do I need to bring food?
A. Yes, unless you have a pact with the local fish. There are no shops, so it’s best to pack what you need. We have the essentials! (cleaning supplies, tea, coffee, etc).
Q. Any final tips for the visitors?
A. Arapawa Island isn't a destination; it's an experience. Please don't be shy to say hi to our locals, book a pearl tour, and browse our blue pearl jewellery collection in person.
