Stay Where Miss Universe NZ Jewellery Is Grown: Dog-Friendly Couples Welcome

That’s not a dream, it’s your reality when you book a stay at Arapawa Blue Pearls.

We’re incredibly proud to be the official pearl partner for Miss Universe New Zealand 2026. Our team hand-selected and crafted bespoke pāua pearl pendants for every single contestant. The winner received a stunning blue pearl necklace and earrings set, while the runners-up each received a beautiful blue pearl necklace.

All grown sustainably right here on Arapaoa Island!

An Island Getaway

Arapaoa Island (often called Arapawa Island) sits at the dramatic meeting point of Queen Charlotte Sound, Tory Channel, and the wild Cook Strait. It’s the second-largest island in the Marlborough Sounds.

A rugged and breathtaking landscape of rolling green hills, native bush, hidden coves, and pristine sandy or rocky beaches. Getting here is part of the adventure and a feature of the experience. No roads onto the island. You’ll arrive at the island by water taxi/private boat (about an hour from Picton), or helicopter if that's how you roll.

When leaving the mainland behind as you glide through some of New Zealand’s most spectacular coastal scenery, about 1/5 of New Zealand's coastline is found through the sounds, as the drowned valleys create extensive coves, bays and inlets. Think dolphins playing in the bow wave, seabirds flying overhead, and dramatic cliffs rising from the sea at the Cook Stait coastlines, as if giants carved them long ago.

Whekenui Bay, where the family pearl farm is based, will feel like your own private world. The air is fresh with cool breezes and open pastures. The only sounds are waves on the shore, birdsong, and the occasional call of a cow, sheep , or seagull.

It’s on grid, with generators on standby, modern appliances, and cell towers close by to keep as connected, or disconnected from the world as you’d like. This is where our sustainable Pāua pearl farming happens, in the land-based tanks that help to protect the future of the species while producing the world’s rarest naturally blue pearls.

The island itself has a rich history too. Once home to whaling stations and early settlers, now a haven for conservation and regenerative aquaculture. Staying here connects you directly to New Zealand’s marine heritage in the most authentic way possible, while being close to one of the most bountiful seashores around, the Cook Strait.

Why Bringing Your Dog Here Is Truly Rare and Special

One of the things guests love most about Arapawa is our genuine dog-friendly policy. We know how important it is for many couples to travel with their four-legged family members, and so we’ve made it easy.

Pets are warmly welcome with prior approval (just mention it when you book).

Only $50 per night per dog.

Your dog can enjoy off-leash beach walks, explore safe island trails, and soak up the same peaceful vibes you do.

Here’s what makes this so special: In a country famous for its conservation focus, truly dog-friendly remote island stays are incredibly rare. Most luxury eco-lodges, private islands, or protected marine areas in the Marlborough Sounds simply don’t allow dogs to protect native wildlife and fragile ecosystems. Arapawa Blue Pearls is one of the very few places where you can bring your dog to a genuinely isolated, ocean-front paradise without compromise.

Imagine your pup racing across the empty beach at sunrise while you sip coffee on the deck, or joining you on a gentle evening stroll past the pearl tanks. No paying for boarding kennels. No guilt of leaving them with a stranger. Just pure joy for the whole family (including the dog). It’s a rare luxury in such a remote and relaxing setting. And one of the reasons we hope our guests keep coming back.

Endless Ways to Fill Your Days (or Simply Do Nothing)

Your time on the island is yours to shape. Here are just some of the activities you can enjoy:

Guided Pearl Farm Tours: Walk right to the tanks where the Miss Universe NZ pearls were grown. Learn the full 4–8 year journey from tiny larvae to finished jewel, meet our resident longfin eels, and even grade pearls yourself. (90-minute standard or 150-minute luxury private tours available.)

Beach & Island Exploration: Swim, snorkel, or simply relax on the sandy beach at Whekenui Bay. Your dog will love it too.

Kayaking & Water Adventures: Bring your own kayaks or paddle boards to explore the sheltered bay, and watch for seals, penguins, or the occasional pod of dolphins.

Hiking & Nature Walks: Follow island trails through pine forests and cleared hills, with panoramic views over Cook Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound. The terrain is perfect for a gentle ramble or something more adventurous.

Stargazing & Sunset Magic: With zero light pollution, the night skies here are spectacular. Bring a blanket and watch the stars while the waves whisper below, or pull out a chair and relax with a glass of wine as the night sky reflects upon the still ocean.

Private Jewellery Experiences: Design your own custom Arapawa Blue Pearl piece (perhaps with lab-grown diamonds) to take home as a forever reminder of your stay.

Slow Living at Its Best: Cook up meals in your bach kitchen, enjoy homemade island treats during your tour, or simply read a book on the deck while the world fades away.

Many couples tell us the best activity is… doing nothing at all. Just being present on this special island is the real magic.

In the end, staying at Arapawa Blue Pearls is about so much more than a romantic getaway.
It’s about stepping directly into the story of New Zealand’s rarest blue pearls. This is the rare place where sustainable luxury, meaningful connection, and authentic New Zealand nature come together. Wake up to the sound of waves on Whekenui Bay, walk past the very pearl tanks that created the Miss Universe pieces, and take home memories (and perhaps your own custom piece of jewellery) that will last a lifetime.

Arapaoa Island isn’t just a destination, it’s where the magic of Arapawa Blue Pearls begins, and where your unforgettable island story can start too. In partnership with projects like Miss Universe New Zealand, we hope to continue helping represent New Zealand on the world stage and foster appreciation for one of its incredible natural beauties.

This will hopefully be the start of an incredible journey for our brand and everyone involved in creating something endemically distinct from what we have out here.

Jacob Radon

Jacob grew up on Arapaoa Island, surrounded by the lifestyle and aquaculture of his parents. From an early age, the rhythms of the island shaped the way he sees the world — the tides, the water, the quiet patience that good farming demands. He loves pāua and has a deep interest in understanding their biology, behaviour, and how best to optimise their growth. That curiosity, rooted in a childhood spent close to the ocean, is what makes Jacob such a natural and passionate part of the Arapawa Blue Pearls team.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the connection between Arapawa Blue Pearls and Miss Universe New Zealand 2026?

We are the official pearl partner for Miss Universe New Zealand 2026. Every bespoke pāua pearl piece worn by the contestants, including the winner’s necklace and earrings set and the runners-up necklaces, was sustainably grown right here on our family pearl farm on Arapaoa Island. Guests staying with us can visit the exact tanks where these rare blue pearls were cultivated.

Where exactly is the accommodation located?

Our baches are nestled at Whekenui Bay on Arapaoa Island (also known as Arapawa Island) in the heart of the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand. This private island has no roads — you arrive by water taxi or private boat (about 1 hour from Picton). The pearl farm and accommodation share the same peaceful ocean-front setting.

What accommodation options do you offer?

We have three distinctive, self-contained kiwi bach-style baches:

The Beach House Retreat – right on the sand with direct beach access

The historic School House – full of character and charm

The Arapawa Homestead (Gunyah) – spacious and perfect for couples wanting extra room

All include full kitchens, comfortable bedding, living areas, and private decks with stunning sea views.

What is the Couples’ Rate, and when is it available?

Our special Couples’ Rate is $200 per night for two people (available February–November 2026). It’s fantastic value for such a unique, private-island experience and ideal for romantic getaways, anniversaries, or proposals.

Is the accommodation dog-friendly?

Yes, we are genuinely dog-friendly! Well-behaved dogs are warmly welcome with prior approval. The pet fee is $50 per night per dog. Your dog can enjoy safe off-leash beach walks, island trails, and the same relaxing freedom you do. Something very rare on private islands and in protected marine areas of the Marlborough Sounds.

Do we need to bring our own food and supplies?

The baches are fully self-catered with equipped kitchens. We’re happy to recommend local suppliers in Picton or Havelock for fresh produce, seafood, and Marlborough wines. Light refreshments are usually included during pearl tours.

How do we get to Arapaoa Island?

Access is by water taxi or private boat. We can help arrange transfers from Picton or Havelock. If you have your own boat, safe mooring is available at Whekenui Bay (small mooring fee applies).

How far in advance should we book?

We recommend booking 3–6 months ahead, especially for long weekends (King’s Birthday, Matariki, Labour Day) and the Christmas/New Year period. The Miss Universe NZ partnership has made dates more popular than ever.

What is your cancellation policy?

We offer a fair and flexible cancellation policy. Full details are provided at the time of booking. We understand that the weather in the Marlborough Sounds can occasionally affect travel plans.
