Leading from the Ocean: Jacob represents our Paua farm at Aquaculture NZ’s Evolving Leaders Hui

Strong leadership in Aquaculture is vital to the future of New Zealand’s Blue Economy. That’s why we’re incredibly proud to share that this month Jacob Radon the Leader of our Pāua stock and quiet force behind our operations was selected to attend the inaugural Evolving Leaders Hui, a national programme led by Aquaculture New Zealand designed to grow the next generation of ocean minded leaders.

Developing Leadership in Aquaculture

The Aquaculture New Zealand leadership course brings together individuals from every corner of the industry, from shellfish and salmon farming to hatchery and pearl operations. To strengthen capability and collaboration across the sector.

As part of the course, the group travelled to Whenua Iti in Nelson where they took part in a high ropes course and later some series of facilitated discussions led by Andrew Fox, focusing on teamwork, confidence and self-awareness. These sessions encouraged participants to reflect on who they are as leaders, explore their communication styles and understand how strong personal values create strong leadership in aquaculture.

”It was an incredible experience to connect with others who share a real passion for aquaculture” Jacob shared, “We were encouraged to push our limits, build trust and think about how we can contribute to the future of aquaculture leadership in New Zealand.”

Inspiring Insights from the Aquaculture Conference

The leadership journey continued at the Aquaculture New Zealand Conference, where Jacob gained valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities shaping the aquaculture industry today.

He joined other participants in listening to inspiring and informative talks, including sessions from Hon Shane Jones, Minister for Oceans and Fisheries and Jason Paris CEO of ONE New Zealand. Their presentations highlighted the importance of innovation, sustainability and collaboration in growing the aquaculture sector responsibly.

For Jacob, the experience provided a rare chance to hear from those driving national conversations about aquaculture’s role in New Zealand’s future. From sustainable seafood production to environmental care and community connection.

Representing Pāua and Sustainable Aquaculture

Representing the Pāua aquaculture community and our
family-run hatchery on Arapaoa Island was a proud moment. At Arapawa Blue Pearls, our work with pāua is more than a business, it’s a commitment to sustainability, ocean health, and future generations.

Jacobs involvment in the Leadership Hui reflects these same values. Through the course, he deepened his understanding of how effective leadership in aquaculture can influence not only team success, but also the health of marine environments and wellbeing of coastal communities.

From the high ropes of the Whenua Iti course  to the conference floor, every part of the week centered on connection, connection to self, to others, and to the wider aquaculture industry.

The groups shared challenges and discussions reminded everyone involved that true leadership in aquaculture starts with empathy, courage and collaboration. By sharing knowledge and supporting one another, the next generation of aquaculture leaders will continue to advance sustainable practices and innovation across New Zealand.

Looking Ahead

We’re incredibly proud to see Jacob growing into a confident, thoughtful leader within the New Zealand Aquaculture industry. His participation in the Aquaculture NZ Emerging Leaders Hui not only represents a personal milestone but also strengthens our collective commitment to responsible pāua aquaculture and ocean sustainability.

At Arapawa Blue Pearls, we believe that leadership in aquaculture is about more than management, it’s about stewardship, community, and kaitiakitanga. As Jacob continues his leadership journey, we look forward to seeing how his experiences will help shape the future of Pāua aquaculture, our island operations and the wider aquaculture sector in Aotearoa.
