Why We Grow Pearls for Four Years

The Secret Behind Our 4-Year Pearl Growing Process

Discover why Arapawa Blue Pearls takes four years to grow each Mabe Pearl and how this process ensures unmatched quality.

At Arapawa Blue Pearls, we believe in quality over speed. That’s why each of our Mabe Pearls takes four years to grow. But why so long? Let’s dive into the process and discover how this patience leads to the creation of pearls with a beauty that is truly unmatched.

Nature's Timeline

Growing a Mabe Pearl is a delicate process that can’t be rushed. Inside each abalone shell, each individual pearl slowly forms over time, developing its unique way with colour and texture.

Mabe Pearls are known for their large size, unique shape, and stunning iridescence, making them a truly unique addition to any jewellery collection.

Ensuring Quality

The longer growth period allows each pearl to be more durable over time. Ensuring the nacre and conchiolin reach the perfect thickness makes a huge difference. This results in a pearl with unmatched beauty and durability.

We can only tell the thickness once the pearl has been removed from the Paua (abalone shell). We use our trusted measuring tool, a dial calliper, to check every pearl.

Harvested shells and cutting pearls from the shell using a diamond cutter.

Anything that is even the slightest showing a thin spot will be discarded.

Worth the Wait

Our pearls take four years to grow, developing a deep lustre and thickness that sets them apart. This allows us to use these pearls perfectly for rings and bracelets.

The process requires a lot of time, feeding, and nurturing, but the result is worth the long-term outcome.
